North Platte

The miles of trout water on the North Platte between the Miracle Mile and downtown Casper, Wyoming were recently named “The #1 Big Fish Destination” by American Angler Magazine.

The 'Platte flows thru Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska. However, the five dams that manage water flow on the “Casper” sections provide consistent flows and temperatures that propagate aquatic insects that are the diet for the 3,000 to 5,000 trout per mile in this neighborhood. These are healthy, strong and - yes – big fish.

A 16” Rainbow will put a big bend in your five-weight rod and introduce you to the backing on your reel. Better bring a supply of 3x tippet. A six weight is a good idea.

There is one glitch: Wyoming’s property laws state that landowners own the land under the river. As a consequence, floating across private land is allowed but you can’t put your booties on the streambed; even anchoring is a no – no without owner permission. Bottom line: a boat is your best bet if you want to tangle with these fish since public access is in short supply.

We’ve organized packages that include experienced guides manning the oars of drift boats, lodging and meals. The details:

Arrive Casper, which has excellent connections with the major airlines.

Headquarters for the trip is 20 miles south of Casper at the Crazy Rainbow Lodge. That's where we’ll eat, bed down, and meet our guides. Details about the lodge can be found at https://crazyrainbow.net/miracle-mile.

The trip begins with dinner after your arrival; after that it’s breakfast at the lodge, lunch on the river with your guide, then back to the lodge where we can relax on a deck overlooking the river with a cocktail before dinner. Oh yeah: BYOB.

BTW: sunsets on the deck are spectacular.

We’ve secured dates in May, August, and October so you have three excellent choices during the prime fishing months.
